Low slung Noughties waist is back but I don’t fancy my stomach hanging out

THE low slung Noughties waist is back – but would you dare to try the sexy trend?

We speak to two women who have very different views on the 2000s comeback.

NO, says Abby McHale

Y2K FASHION – that’s anything that was big in the early Noughties – has been doing the rounds for a few seasons, from Juicy Couture-style tracksuits to Ugg boots and mini handbags.

Now, low-waisted clothing – in particular, jeans – is making an unwelcome comeback.

Missoni, Miu Miu, Molly Goddard and MSGM have showcased the look on their catwalks, as have celebrities including Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger.

I am 27 and this trend is aimed at people my age.

But wearing something with such a low waist is an absolute no for me.

I’m a size 12 or 14, with a belly to match.

High waists have been a saviour to me. They sit nicely above my hips, cover my stomach and hug in all the right places, like a safety blanket.

Anything low-slung would sit awkwardly, making my gut protrude over the top.

That is something nobody wants to see, myself included.

I have heard people say you can buy a size up so they sit looser.

But I still don’t fancy my stomach hanging out when sitting down.

The early Noughties, when low waists were first in fashion, was an era when “skinny” was the standard for beauty.

It was normal to see the trend . . . but only on people whose hip bones would protrude from their flat bellies.

It was also an era when eating a bowl of pasta was not cool in the fashion world.

Thankfully, times have changed. We now embrace our bodies a lot more.

But I still can’t see anyone over a size ten getting on board with this trend.

People still want to dress to flatter their bodies. And I don’t care what anyone says – I can’t see low-slung jeans doing that for me.

I’m sure plenty of women feel the same.

You might cite “curvier” celebrities such as Kim Kardashian who have been wearing the trend lately.

But let’s be honest: She doesn’t have an ounce of fat on her stomach.

Don’t get me wrong. Keira Knightley in Love Actually, Jennifer Lopez in her Jenny From The Block days and Paris Hilton, most of the time, were all unforgettable in their belly-revealing, low-slung “bumsters” (the term designer Alexander McQueen gave the trend in the Nineties).

And usually, as a stylist, I’m the first to jump on a new trend bandwagon and try something different.

But are there not trends we can look back on and agree they should be left in the past?

I’m hoping the fad stays with this generation of TikTok teenagers.

Searches for “low-rise jeans” are up 58 per cent year on year, according to shopping platform Lyst.

Otherwise, get used to seeing a load of adult women walking around constantly hoicking up their trousers to cover their stomachs.

Personally, I’ll be sticking to my comfy, flattering mom jeans – even if it is not the “in” thing.

YES, says Imogen Thomas

WHEN I first entered the Big Brother house in 2006 I wore a low-slung maxi skirt and felt amazing.

I was nervous and I didn’t really know what I was letting myself in for but that shimmery hip-baring skirt made me feel confident and sexy.

In those days I had a majorly flat tummy so I would take every opportunity to wear something that showed it off. As my mum would say, “If you’ve got it flaunt it”.

It made me feel good – much sexier than a dress would.

My go-to was that classic combination of low-waist jeans and a bright boob-tube. Thinking about that look fills me with memories of being young and carefree.

I always had minimal make-up and bits of jewellery but not too much.

The look was laid back and effortless and your inner confidence shone through.

You could wear the style for a trip down your high street with trainers, or more likely Ugg boots, then swap in heels for a night out.

Fast-forward to now and the trend is back, and I couldn’t be happier.

There have been low-slung mini skirts on the Miu Miu catwalk, and top designers like Givenchy and Louis Vuitton have brought back my favourite – the low-rise maxi skirt.

When I saw this, my first thought was that I could never wear low-slung waists today.

I’m 39 and a mum now. My body has changed. I’ve got a “mum tum”.
But the way we wear clothes has changed a lot, too.

In the early Noughties our style queens were stick-thin celebs like Nicole Richie, but these days curves are king thanks to Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and new muse, actress Julia Fox.

Look at Rihanna. She’s pregnant and rocking low-rise trousers that show off her gorgeous bump.

Not that long ago women would have been glared at for doing that.
You can pull off the same look when you’re not pregnant with a pair of baggy boyfriend trousers.

Thanks to curvy role models and other body-positive influencers with real bodies, fashion trends like this are moving off the runway from skinny girls to normal girls.

Mom jeans, even high-waisted, are usually my go-to trews but can feel like you’re wearing Spanx, pulling your stomach in with skin seeping over the top.

I can’t wait, once the weather is a little warmer, to pop a pair of low-rise denims on and breathe!

Don’t get me wrong, these days I’ve got more of a two-pack than a six so I might not be wearing a crop top, but I’ll definitely flash a bit of skin on my hip line.

For too long we’ve been slobbing around in lockdown loungewear.

It’s time to reclaim our womanly, curvy figures and show them off.

I love my body, it gave me children.

And I’ll be wearing this trend proudly.
