Moors Murders: The Witness viewers horrified by ‘skin-crawling’ new documentary on Ian Brady and Myra Hindley

A Channel 4 documentary on the Moors Murders of the 1960s has horrified viewers almost 60 years after the acts were carried out.

Moors Murders: The Witness has given viewers an in-depth view at the serial murders that took place near Manchester between 1963 and 1965.

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley lured, tortured and killed five children before they were eventually caught and spent the rest of their days in prison.

While the case is well-documented, the new show has delved even deeper into the horrors by interviewing witnesses to the brutal attacks and revealing letters the killers sent from prison.

The documentary also used technology to make the infamous mugshots of the killers blink and move – which many viewers found disturbing.

‘I actually hate those moving mugshots,’ one person wrote. ‘Scum of the earth making my blood boil.’

‘The images of Brady & Hindley are as chilling today as they were years ago,’ another agreed.

One told Channel 4 there was ‘really no need for the animated photos,’ adding: ‘They’ve always been horrific enough and always will be.’

Moors Murders: The Witness opened with David Smith recalling the murder of Edward Evans, who Brady had beaten to death in front of him – Brady then ordered David to help with the body before letting him walk free.

David – who was married to Hindley’s sister – would go to the police, and his statement finally led Brady and Hindley to be caught for the serial murders.

One viewer paid tribute to David, saying ‘Having to live with seeing someone being murdered must be its own special kind of hell. David Smith has lived this hell for nearly 60 years.’

Another remembered the child victims of Brady and Hindley, calling the perpetrators ‘absolutely sick and twisted evil monsters’.

‘Wow, this is really chilling,’ another viewer said. ‘What utterly vile sick people they were.’

Another wrote: ‘Watching the #MoorsMurders documentary and my skin is absolutely crawling.’

One viewer who said they ‘read pretty much all the books available’ on the murders also admitted their ‘skin is still f*****g crawling watching this’.

Throughout the documentary and despite the disturbing details, at its core the story revolves around five murdered children, and many viewers took to social media to remember them

Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey were the five victims of Hindley and Brady; one viewer shared photographs of all five to Twitter and wrote simply: ‘Rest in peace.’

Another admitted: ‘I can’t drive over the Moors without thinking about those poor children’.

Brady and Hindley murdered five children in the 1960s, and buried four of their bodies in Saddleworth Moor in the south Pennines.

The whereabouts of one of their victims, Keith Bennett, was never revealed, as Brady took the secret with him to the grave when he died in 2017.

Hindley also died in prison in 2002 at the age of 60.
