He’s 19 and on a gap year but spends all day in his room on his Xbox.

He’s now said he doesn’t want to go to university.
He did well in his A-levels but seems so low.
He works in a newsagent on Saturdays but that’s his life. He has nothing else.
I’m his dad and 45. He’s a lovely lad and I think he’ll have a good future ahead of him but I can’t get him motivated.

DEIDRE SAYS: The good thing is you have opened a dialogue about his future. He knows staying in his room is not helping him.
There are lots of opportunities for young people to get on the career ladder without going to university. It does not suit everyone.
Suggest he talks to his GP if he is feeling low, then sit down with him and look at apprenticeships.gov.uk.
