Aston Villa and Newcastle in Georginio Wijnaldum transfer hunt as midfielder could leave PSG after just one season

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could be set for a return to the Premier League, according to reports.

Aston Villa and Newcastle have both been linked with a move for the former Liverpool man as he continues to struggle in France.

Wijnaldum has started just 12 of PSG‘s 26 Ligue 1 matches since arriving in the summer.

And he has only managed three goals and two assists in all competitions as the form he showed at Anfield looks to have disappeared.

He has been reduced to a bit-part player in the squad as Mauricio Pochettino favours the likes of Leandro Paredes, Danilo Pereira, Idrissa Gueye and Marco Verratti.

According to Calciomercato, Villa and Newcastle are interested in bringing the Dutchman in.

But they face stiff competition from fellow Premier League rivals West Ham if they are to secure his signature.

And LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid are also thought to be keen on the Holland international.

Wijnaldum enjoyed a stellar spell in England with Liverpool between 2016 and 2021.

He made 237 appearances for the Reds, scoring 22 goals and assisting a further 16.

His standout moment came in 2019 when he netted twice in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona – a result which saw them win their Champions League semi-final tie 4-3.

Liverpool went on to beat Tottenham in the final and become European champions for a sixth time.

Wijnaldum was also a part of the Liverpool side which won the league title for the first time in 30 years back in 2020.

He ended up leaving Merseyside at the end of last season after his contract expired.
