Acclaimed Toy Story songwriter Randy Newman postpones tour after discovering his neck was broken

Randy Newman, the Oscar-winning songwriter behind Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., has rescheduled his tour after learning that he broke his neck.

In an update shared on his website, it was explained that the European tour dates for his live in concert event ‘An Evening with Randy Newman’ had been rescheduled as he recovers from surgery.

The composer said in a statement that he recently ‘noticed I was shrinking’, saying: ‘People over whom I had towered over me,’ as he questioned: ‘Could this be payback for having written Short People?’

The 78-year-old then revealed that it turned out ‘my neck was broken’, resulting in him requiring a surgical procedure and now taking ‘extended recovery’.

‘They operated on me successfully, I think. For even now, I look less like an anteater and more like a folk rock artist from the early sixties,’ he said.

However, he added that the doctor has advised him not to go on tour yet, as he is ‘not quite ready’.

‘I was really looking forward to coming to Europe to perform,’ he wrote.

‘I miss performing a great deal and I look forward to a time when I can come. I’m sorry I won’t see you this time but I will see you soon.’

The European tour was supposed to start in March 2022, but the dates have been postponed, with new dates yet to be announced.

In the update on Newman’s website, it said that ‘ticket holders will be contracted by their point of purchase with further information and news of their rescheduled dates in the near future’.

The singer-songwriter is currently due to perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 1 this year.

Nerwman has received 22 Oscar nominations throughout his career, winning twice in the Best Original Song category for ‘If I Didn’t Have you’ from Monsters, Inc. in 2002 and for ‘We Belong Together’ from Toy Story 3 in 2011.

He has also received three Emmys and seven Grammys, has been officially dubbed a Disney Legend and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
