Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones recalls ending up in hospital ‘with a tube in his groin’ due to dangerous health issue

Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones has opened up on the time he was hospitalised following a long plane journey, winding up with a ‘tube in his groin’.
On tonight’s episode of the BBC One series, Paul Westerman from Cambridgeshire entered the Den to put forward the RBR legflow, a clinically-trialled product aimed to help prevent deep vein thrombosis.
The entrepreneur explained that in 2011, nine days before he was due to be married, he ‘collapsed to the floor dead’ after suffering a ‘massive bilateral pulmonary embolism’, having injured his knee a couple of weeks prior and suffered deep vein thrombosis in his right leg.
When the time came for the Dragons to question Paul on his business, Peter explained how he related to the business owner’s story.
‘I know that this is an issue. I was coming back on a flight from Los Angeles, and I basically ended up in hospital in Windsor with a tube in my groin and it was without doubt because I wasn’t moving for a long period of time,’ he said.
‘Ever since, I’ve done exactly the same as you. I literally move all the time, and even when I’m sitting in this chair.’

Peter emphasised how he ‘knows that this is an issue’, adding that ‘sadly many people have lost their lives over this problem’.
Despite Peter expressing how impressed he was by the product, when it emerged that Paul didn’t have a patent, this caused several of the Dragons to feel unease over investing.
While it may have seemed as though Paul would be walking away from the Den without an investment, in the end, Touker Suleyman swooped in to save the day, offering the entrepreneur an offer that he accepted before blinking twice.
In 2010, Peter spoke to the Daily Mail about a previous health scare he once had, when he thought he was ‘going to die’.

‘Three years ago I had pneumonia. I had been working too hard and got a bit run-down,’ he said at the time.
‘I got very, very wheezy and had trouble breathing – so much so that I thought I was going to die. I was put on a course of antibiotics.’
