Mercedes Set to Retain Massive Record After F1 Cancels Russian Grand Prix

Mercedes have been a dominant force ever since the beginning of the hybrid era back in 2014. Since then, the Silver Arrows have gone on to shatter almost every record in the history of the sport. The 8-time Constructors’ Champions have produced brilliant performances over the last decade, cementing their legacy in Formula 1.

However, the team is also set to create a new record in Formula 1. After the news of the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix, Mercedes now stand undefeated at the Russian GP since 1913. This ‘record’ goes back to Georgy Suvorin’s first win driving a Benz 29/60 PS, more than 1oo years ago. The following year, Germany’s Willy Scholl claimed a  win in a Benz 55/150 HP. There were no events held between 1913-2014.

Eventually, F1 struck a deal Russian Grand Prix in the city of Sochi for 2014. Circuit designer Hermann Tilke was the brains behind the construction of the track in Sochi. Since then, 3 Mercedes drivers have won the Russian Grand Prix every year till 2021. 7-time Champion Lewis Hamilton won the editions in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021.

Former World Champion Nico Rosberg won in 2016, with his replacement Valtteri Bottas taking home the prize in 2017 and 2020. In 2019, however, there were plans to move the venue to the brand new Igora Drive in St. Petersburg.

Will Mercedes Find a New Hunting Ground?

The contract with the Russian Grand Prix has been terminated after the geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine. This means that there will not be any events in the foreseeable future. While the decision is unfortunate, the race calendar will look for an alternative location in 2022.

With Mercedes entering a new era, they face stiff competition from rivals Red Bull yet again this season. However, after the pre-season testing, there is a possibility of new entrants into the Championship scene. Ferrari and McLaren could also pose a threat to the Silver Arrows, who have won 8 consecutive Constructors’ Championships.

The 2022 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20. With Lewis Hamilton and new teammate George Russell, Mercedes definitely are the team to beat. However, nothing is guaranteed in Formula 1, so expect the unexpected!
