Good Times star and comedian Johnny Brown dies aged 84

American actor, singer and comedian Johnny Brown has died at the age of 84, his family confirmed in a heartfelt tribute. 

Brown, who played building superintendent Nathan Bookman on the 1970s CBS sitcom Good Times, died on March 2. 

His daughter, Broadway actress Sharon Catherine Brown, confirmed the news on social media as she paid tribute to her father. 

Sharing a photo of Brown smiling broadly, she told fans: ‘Johnny Brown, June 11, 1937 – March 2, 2022.

‘Our family is devastated. Devastated. Devastated. Beyond heartbroken. Barely able to breathe. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time because we need a minute to process the unthinkable. To articulate the depths of profound sadness.

‘This is my mom’s husband for sixty one years, mine and JJ’s dad, Elijah and Levi’s Pop Pop, older brother to George and brother in law to Pat and extended family to Chris, Hihat, Damian and Derell.

‘It’s too terrible. It will never not be. It’s a shock. He was literally snatched out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet. So there will be more to say but not now. Dad was the absolute best. We love him so very much.’

Brown, who was born in Florida and raised in Harlem, also recorded songs and performed in a band with saxophonist Sam ‘The Man’ Taylor. 

He made two appearances on Broadway and made his film debut playing a blind pianist in the 1966 drama A Man Called Adam.

The actor also made appearances on shows including The Jeffersons, Julia, Maude, The Rookies and Family Matters. 

Further details of Brown’s death are not yet known. He is survived by his wife, son JJ and daughter Sharon, brother George and grandchildren Elijah and Levi.
