Massive Controversy Ensues as Canadian WTA Star Leylah Fernandez Stops the Final Down Championship Point – Goes on to Win the Match and the Title in Monterrey

Leylah Fernandez emerged onto the big stage when she finished as the runners-up in the US Open last year. She had an incredible tournament, defeating the likes of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Aryna Sabalenka, and others en route to the final. However, she couldn’t overcome Emma Raducanu in the summit clash. Nonetheless, it was a massive breakthrough for the emerging Canadian.

Leylah Fernandez is in Mexico to participate in the WTA 250 Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey. She came from behind to win her first title of the season. However, an unusual incident took place midway through the third set.

Summit clash between Leylah Fernandez and Camila Osorio delayed for 10 minutes in Mexico

The Canadian was up against Camila Osorio of Columbia in the finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Monterrey. However, with Fernandez serving at 5-6 40-40 in the 3rd set, an electrical problem took out some of the lights, as well as stream audio and official live scoring. Osorio won the point. However, the Canadian argued with the chair umpire for the point to be replayed.

Incredible. With Fernandez serving at 5-6 40-40 in the 3rd, an electrical problem takes out some of the lights, as well as stream audio and official live scoring. Osorio wins point, Leylah wants a let. No dice.

Now a lengthy delay on match point as they try to fix the lights.

Subsequently, the match had to be delayed for 10 minutes to fix the issue.

A 10-minute delay for a lighting issue, yikes. Doesn’t look THAT dark there at the moment on TV, but tough to tell.

Fernandez saved the match point as she eventually won the hard-fought final 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3) in just under three hours.

It was a grueling match, going right down to the wire. The Columbian would be disappointed not to cross the finishing line after putting on an encouraging display against the second seed.

Fernandez’s 2022 season

The Canadian tennis sensation didn’t have an ideal start to this season. She began this year at the Adelaide International 1 tournament. However, she lost in the second round against Iga Swiatek of Poland.

Further, in the Australian Open, she suffered a shock defeat against wildcard Maddison Inglis in the opening round. Fernandez would be relieved to come back to form at the right time, especially with the ‘Sunshine Double’ coming up. Can she continue the winning momentum in the coming tournaments?
