“Something Could Happen to Me”- When Diego Sanchez Was Scared for His Life From UFC

MMA fighter Diego Sanchez had been with the UFC for a very long time. He had been fighting for the promotion since 2005. His last UFC fight was against Jake Matthews at UFC 253 in 2020. However, in 2021, the news broke out that his contract was terminated.

Sanchez had a fight scheduled against Donald Cerrone in May 2021, which was called off. As per Dana White, the fighter’s head coach, Joshua Fabia had requested the promotion all the medical documents throughout Sanchez’s long career with the UFC in order to process his medicals for the Cerrone bout.

The UFC President has asked Sanchez and Fabia for assurance that the fighter had no long-term or short-term health risks. But an attorney informed the promotion on Sanchez’s behalf that the fighter cannot give reassurance for the same. As reported by ESPN, this situation led to the contract being terminated.

According to an article published by ‘Marca‘, Sanchez was scared for his life. He said, “I’m scared that this multi-billion-dollar corporate monopoly is coming for me. Something could happen to me in two years, maybe they’ll do something to my car, or maybe it will be ‘Diego had an overdose or committed suicide’, I don’t know”.

The article also detailed that the fighter’s advisors told him the promotion was trying to make him give up his medical rights. Perhaps owing to all these, the UFC decided that it was time to let Sanchez go.
