Sly Raccoon 5 reveal rumoured for September – not today’s State of Play

Don’t expect it at the State of Play, but fans are hopeful that a new Sly Raccoon is in development and will be revealed this year.

It’s been nearly 10 years since the last Sly Raccoon game (known as Sly Cooper in America) released, ending on a tantalising cliffhanger that fans have been desperate to see resolved.

Rumours of a new entry have been circulating since last year, with some even claiming that original developer Sucker Punch, now of Ghost Of Tsushima fame, was coming back to work on it. That seems unlikely but a trademark update does suggest Sly 5 will happen without them.

As spotted and shared on Reddit, the domain for the series’ official website (which at the time of writing doesn’t work) was updated on March 4, with Sucker Punch still listed as the registrant company.

It’s worth stressing that this update doesn’t necessarily mean a new game is in development. There could just as easily be plans for a remake or re-release – or perhaps Sony and Sucker Punch simply don’t want the domain to expire.

However, Twitter user AccountNGT has also claimed to have heard tale of a new Sly game. Earlier this month, they accurately predicted that a new PlayStation event was planned for March, adding that 2022 will see announcements and releases for returning franchises.

They later clarified that both a new Sly and a new inFamous (another Sucker Punch property) are in development, and that the former won’t be announced until the second half of 2022, as this year marks the series’ 20th anniversary. The first game released in September 2002 so that month would be the ideal time for it.

This rules out a surprise reveal at tonight’s State of Play. Although Sony has already said it will primarily focus on Japanese developed games, with only a few games from other countries.

The only other detail AccountNGT shared was that Sucker Punch isn’t developing the new Sly game, which makes sense as the studio moved on after 2005’s Sly 3 to make Infamous and is no doubt busy with more Ghost Of Tsushima, considering how successful that game was.

Sanzaru Games took over for the fourth game, but it probably won’t be making another Sly either since it was bought out by Facebook in 2020 and is now a part of Oculus Studios.

AccountNGT has reliably shared insider info in the past. They accurately predicted a cinematic trailer for Star Wars: Eclipse at The Game Awards 2021 and that Forspoken had been delayed nearly a week before Luminous Productions officially said so.

Assuming a new Sly game is in development, the big questions are which studio will take up the helm and, if it’s entirely new and not a remake, whether it will pick up from the fourth game’s cliffhanger or reboot the series.
