Michael Jordan Was Heckled for His Gambling in a Live Game and All He Could Do Was Sit and Watch

Michael Jordan is arguably one of the greatest players to have ever set foot in the NBA. His ability to dominate his opponents in any situation is what made him a legend. Under his wing, the Chicago Bulls won six titles and took over the NBA by storm. Jordan’s presence on the roster gave fans complete faith in the team. They knew that as long as MJ was there, winning was more of a reality than a dream.

So it was almost as if the universal aim of every team in the NBA was to beat MJ and Bulls. Although they employed various on-court strategies to overcome the superstar, there have been some off-court plans too. Charles Barkley made one such plan. In the 1993 NBA finals, Barkley took the help of the infamous Robin Ficker so as to unsettle Jordan.

The Plan to Heckle Michael Jordan

The 1993 NBA finals was a hard-fought six-game series between the Bulls and Suns. In his first season in Phoenix, Charles Barkley led the franchise to the best win-loss record that season and ended up in the NBA finals. However, their opponents were MJ’s Bulls, whose aim was to complete a three-peat.

In order to gain an edge over MJ, Barkley took the help of Ficker to provide some external noise. He bought Ficker an air ticket to Phoenix along with a seat behind the Bulls’ bench. The rest was on Ficker’s intellect. The infamous heckler made use of Jordan’s gambling situation at the time to try to unsettle him.

“I brought these huge playing cards, dice, and a bunch of dollar bills. During the game, I’m dealing (Jordan) a hand and asking him what he wants to bet. And he’s turning around and holding up three fingers. It was fun,” said Ficker about his experience.

Although it seemed like Jordan was responding to Ficker, Barkley’s ultimate plan had failed as Ficker was sent out of the arena. Moreover, the Suns lost the series. To make matters worse for Chuck, the man would never feature in another NBA finals after 1993. Although the plan was to beat MJ, it was Jordan who had the last laugh. Regardless, this incident is hilarious without any intention of harm. It also cites how MJ took the heckling sportingly.
