I’m a professional stylist – women always make BIG fashion mistakes that AGE them & why it’s all about good legs

WHEN it comes to fashion, all of us tend to think we know what works for us the best.

But, according to a professional stylist, this is not always the case – and some mishaps only age women.

Offering a helping hand to navigate through the stores, Gabrielle Teare, who’s been featured in some of the biggest names in the industry, including Marie Claire, Esquire, Elle France and Vogue, revealed the Dos and Don’ts of fashion.

ALL BLACK EVERYTHING

When in doubt, always wear black” is one of the most popular fashion rules we’ve been fed for decades.

It is perhaps then no surprise that most of our wardrobe will also be black – from dresses to trousers, tops to blazers, we all have at least one of each in black.

But whilst it may seem like the perfect classic that’s impossible to go wrong with, Gabrielle, who also teaches others how to become stylists, is not the biggest fan of the popular colour.

‘’Every single woman will be wearing at this time of year black or grey – and it’s so dull.

‘’And your eye goes to someone who’s wearing cream or red,” said the expert, who claimed most will appear ”washed-out” in black outfits.

Unless you’re a blonde like Gwyneth Paltrow or a redhead like the Good Girls’ actress, Christina Hendricks, who, according to the expert, can pull off black and beige – another colour Gabrielle thinks is ”very dull” – it’s time to reinvent your closet and add a pop of colour.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go crazy and wear all red – although that’s certainly an option.

Adding as little as a bright neckerchief or a cheerful lipstick will instantly elevate your look, giving a more youthful appearance.

WRONG SIZING

Having being constantly reminded that the ”ideal” body shape is slim, most people have developed severe body dysmorphia and self-esteem issues.

A recent study found that the majority of women will always insult themselves about their weight, stomach, legs and bum – and will thus try to hide with every way possible.

Similarly to fashion lovers reaching for black whenever the opportunity arises, Gabrielle has also observed the tendency to buy garments that are a size too big; this, she noted, applies not only to women.

”And they do that because they think they’re overweight or because they think they’re fat – and they think it’s more slimming.”

To avoid a baggy look – which can also appear ”sloppy” – it’s best to find clothing that is tailored and well-fitted, as well as learn what works for each individual.

”I think it would benefit most people to go and see a stylist at least once in their life, so they learn the colours and shapes that suit them.”

BYE, BYE, DOCS

With the 90s grunge theme making a comeback, Dr. Martens – a classic that everyone seems to own at least a pair of – have also found their way back into mainstream fashion.

From celebrities running errands to attending award ceremonies and fashion shows rocking the famous lace-up boots, it seems like Docs are a must-have staple in everyone’s wardrobe.

But not Gabrielle’s – she believes the chunky boots are ”too masculine for most women”.

”Footwear – women’s easiest way to stay up-too-date is to change the shoes.

”You’ve got a job, you’re a city lawyer and you buy your shoes from Dune – and not only do you buy them in Dune, you bought them in Dune ten or 12 years ago.

”Chuck them out – […] they don’t last forever.”

ALL ABOUT GOOD LEGS

When speaking about fashion for women over 40, the one garment that constantly comes up in the discussion of ”Should I wear it?” is miniskirt.

”I’m over 40 and I still wear miniskirts, I don’t care – cause my legs look really good.”

Whilst, she explained, there are no age restrictions of when one should stop going for a leggy display, women should pay attention the appearance of their legs – as not every pair can pull off a short skirt or shorts.

”It depends on the woman – if a woman is older and has just got bad hair and doesn’t look after herself at all and she wears miniskirt, it looks quite cheap.

”It really depends on your legs – if you’ve got good legs, you can get away with wearing miniskirt for a very long time,” says Gabrielle, who used to practice ballet growing up.

BAD SHOPPING HABITS

Working as a professional stylist, Gabrielle has seen a fair share of wardrobes – at the start of the session, each of her clients will go through an in-depth review of their closet.

But whilst every individual will be different to one another, there are a few things virtually everyone shares – one of them being a clothing item we simply cannot get enough of; a piece we will bag whenever we’re shopping.

For some, it may be a turtleneck, for others – a pair of mum jeans.

‘’You always buy the same thing,” the expert tells, mentioning a client who was obsessed with cowboy boots and a friend that had dozens of pinstripe t-shirts and other items.

When it comes to going on a shopping spree – or, perhaps, just browsing the latest collection – Gabrielle says there are three main questions to ask before committing to purchasing an item.

”Look in the mirror and ask ”Do I really love it?”, ”Is it doing anything for me?”, ”Do I look expensive?”

”If fabric is cheap – you will look cheap, no matter how much you pay for it.”

With countless different options on the market, it’s best to stick to natural fabrics, like linen and cotton – you skin will thank you too, as the material will let your pores breathe.

Where possible, Gabriella insists, invest in high quality, beautiful jewellery.

”Buy less and buy better,” is how the professional feels about the current obsession with fast fashion.

Whilst the new clothing lines might make you feel up-to-date with the latest trends for a few weeks – until the industry barges in with an entirely different collection – the retailers often rely on exploiting cheap labour in developing nations and will resort to using low-quality fabrics.

Having to constantly repurchase the poor-quality garment for it to look good again, women will most likely end up wasting more money than if they were to bag a one-off that will last longer.

THE POWER OF COLLARS

When someone walks by or you look at a photo, the first thing you will notice about the person is their face.

But, according to Gabrielle, this is where the right garments can change everything.

If the top or the blouse doesn’t have a collar – ‘’unless you’re extremely beautiful’’ –  a collarless neckline is the amongst the worst things a person can do.

”Collars and colours…It frames your face.’

”I believe people should be as gorgeous as they can for as long as they can.

”I can and do make people look 10-15 years younger and they love it!”
