The card dates back to a year before his eventual F1 debut with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Since then, the Brit has gone on to become the most successful driver in Formula 1 history. Ironically, a PSA 9 2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire card of rival Max Verstappen also sold earlier in 2022. The item sold for a meagre $50,000.
The two rivals are now on par in terms of contract value. Verstappen, who won his maiden title in 2021 is now set to earn £40 million a year. The contract duration extends to 2028. Hamilton, meanwhile returns to the Mercedes paddock for his 10th campaign with the Silver Arrows. Both teams are expected to go face-to-face yet again with the first race in Bahrain.
However, it will be a task cut out as new teams could also be welcomed into the mix. Ferrari and McLaren have shown serious pace over two practice testings in Barcelona and Bahrain.

Will Lewis Hamilton Impress with George Russell in 2022?
Interestingly, the Silver Arrows have gone for a mix of talent and experience. Russell, who signed for Williams in 2019, replaces Valtteri Bottas after five years with the team. He has been impressive with a career-best P2 at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2021.

The all-English pairing will begin their quest for a 9th Constructors’ title after a controversial 2021. Hamilton, was denied in the final lap of last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after a late call from former race director Michael Masi. He will look to move on from and begin afresh in Bahrain this season.
Team Principal Toto Wolff will have his work cut out as the new cars come into force this year. The 50-year old will be cautious of Red Bull’s constant threat, with a possibility of new contenders along the way. The new season promises to be one of the most challenging for the Silver Arrows as they begin their campaign in under a week.
