‘Couldn’t Imagine Myself Ever Exploding Like That’- Reilly Opelka Feels Alexander Zverev Was Not Himself During Acapulco Outburst Episode

German tennis star Alexander Zverev has been one of the most promising youngsters since he first arrived on tour. Over the last few years, his stature on the tour has grown in spades, winning six titles in 2021 alone, which includes Olympic Gold as well.

However, not so long ago, Zverev was caught up in a scuffle in Mexico. After losing the doubles match, he lost his cool and smashed his racquet on the chair of the umpire. The act was definitely not a pleasant sight, setting an inappropriate example for the youngsters.

Alexander Zverev did not set the right example in Mexico 

Recently, American player Reilly Opelka spoke on the issue of Zverev’s actions in Acapulco. He added that he could never see himself behave in such an inappropriate manner no matter what the outcome of the match turns out to be.

Speaking on this subject, Reilly stated, “What someone have to do to get suspended is the better question. It was close. The thing that’s crazy and I mean, it’s comical about that. It’s a doubles match. I mean, I can’t imagine even a slam doubles. I couldn’t imagine myself ever exploding like that, in really any match when hitting my rack against the chair.” He also added, “It doesn’t make sense as to why that outburst would come in doubles match“.

As far as tennis is concerned, Zverev did not have a great start to 2022 as he would have expected. At the Australian Open, he lost in the fourth round to Denis Shapovalov. Following that, he lost to Alexander Bublik in the final in Montpellier.

The German player paid the price for his actions in Acapulco

Following his outburst, after the doubles match in Acapulco, Zverev was defaulted at the Mexican Open despite being present in the singles draw.

His woes continued in the Californian desert. He bowed out in the Round of 64, losing to Tommy Paul in three sets in Indian Wells. It remains to be seen how the German handles this precarious situation to bounce back on the tour.

On the other hand, Opelka is having a decent run so far this season. He won in Dallas last month. At the Indian Wells Masters, he will take on 21-time Grand Slam winner, Rafael Nadal, in their Round of 32 encounter.
