I fired our babysitter for being a ‘bad influence’ on our kids because of how she dressed – my wife isn’t speaking to me

BABYSITTERS can be lifesaving for couples when it comes to looking after their children and organizing the messes that the kids make around their house.  

Who you hire, however, depends of what you’re hoping to get out of the caretaker.

One man said that he fired his children’s babysitter after a series of “inappropriate” behaviors—and his wife is now refusing to speak to him because of it.

He and his wife hired an 18-year-old babysitter named Adeline for their five children: an 8-month-old baby, 2-year-old girl, four-year-old girl, five-year-old boy, and seven-year-old girl.  

“A couple problems are that she’s consistently late. It’s usually no more than 5 minutes (she has been 10 and even 15 minutes late, however) but it’s still irritating.

“Another thing is, after she gets everyone in bed, she spends the rest of the night on her phone or laptop.

“She never cleans up in the playroom because she claims it’s always messy and she doesn’t know where anything goes and will only clean up what she did with the kids.”

The father said that Adeline won’t clean the dishes unless she used them or the toys.

“Another problem is that her outfits can be a little inappropriate for kids so young (crop tops, shorts/skirts/dresses that are a little too short, low-cut shirts, etc.).

“I’ve asked my wife to talk to her about it (I felt that it would be more comfortable coming from another woman), but she refused, even though she admitted that she would like Adeline to wear slightly less revealing clothes.”

When the father’s parents came in town, they decided to take his children on a walk.

During that walk, the father said they bumped into Adeline on a run only wearing a sports bra and short shorts “that barely covered anything.”

“All of my kids had seen it and we heard about how they had seen Adeline without a shirt for days.”

He said his five-year-old-son has also begun saying how pretty Adeline is and that he wants to marry her when he’s older.

So, the father decided to fire the babysitter.

“When I told my wife, she started screaming at me because she thinks Adeline is a great babysitter and is reasonably priced.

“I told her Adeline is a bad influence and I don’t want her around my kids but she’s refusing to speak to me until I call Adeline back and offer her job back.

“She even wants me to offer her a raise if she says no.”

Reddit users took to the wife’s defense, labeling the father the bad guy:

“Kids don’t sexualize clothing, you did,” one person wrote.

“My son wanted to marry me until a few years ago (he’s 10 now). Kids want to marry whoever they feel safe and loved around. The 5 year old would still want to marry her if she dressed like a nun,” another added.

Another addressed the other “problems” the father mentioned about Adeline: “Is it her job to pick up after your kids, do your dishes? She’s there to care for the kids, not the house maid or nanny.

“The kids are old enough to clean their own messes and you and your wife are old enough to clean your own damn dishes.”
