Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk promises new horror movie will be ‘more violent’ than hit Netflix series

Many of us are still reeling from the sheer savagery of Squid Game but there’s more, as the series’ creator has announced his new movie that promises to be even ‘more violent’. Gulp.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is the mastermind behind the Korean Netflix horror series, which took the world by storm last year thanks to its gruesome twist on childhood games.
Well, brace yourselves as the filmmaker has announced his next offering, a movie adaptation of the novel Killing Old People Club.
So, not exactly a title that screams happy ending.
The book was written by Italian intellectual and essayist Umberto Eco, and Hwang has already written a 25-page treatment with the promise it will be ‘another controversial film’.
‘It will be more violent than Squid Game,’ Hwang warns at MipTV according to Variety.

He also joked that he might have to hide from old people after the film is released – or vice versa! – and that he’s currently going with the working title K.O. Club.
Again, the ‘K.O.’ part isn’t filling us with hope for these poor pensioners.
Hwang, 50, added that he’s returning home to South Korea to finish working on the script for Squid Game season two, which he hopes will be released on Netflix at the end of 2024.

Squid Game’s unprecedented success has continued well into awards season, with O Yeong-Su – who played Oh Il-namin – becoming the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe after scooping best supporting actor in a TV drama.
The hit survivalist series follows 456 players in deep financial debt, competing in a number of children’s games to win a grand cash prize. However, it’s not as simple as winning a game of What’s The Time Mr Wolf? as the contestants face a bloody fate if they lose.

Confident in its future success, Hwang previously revealed he was already planning ahead for a third season.
Speaking to Korean broadcaster KBS, he said: ‘I’m in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.’
