Sky Broadband launches Gigafast as ‘fastest internet EVER’ today – but there’s a big catch

SKY has launched its fastest broadband package ever – with speeds around 25 times faster than the cheapest deal.

The new Sky Broadband Gigafast offer gets you a whopping 900Mbps (megabits per second).

SkySky’s new Gigafast broadband promises ultra-rapid downloads – with a minimum speed guarantee[/caption]

That’s extremely fast: far higher than the national average.

According to Ofcom’s 2021 report, UK home broadband speeds are typically around 50Mbps.

But it doesn’t come cheap: you’ll have to pay £55 a month to get the ultra-fast speeds.

However, it’s still less than Virgin Media’s very similar (and slightly faster) Gig1 fibre broadband package, which costs £62 a month.

Thankfully Sky is offering a Speed Guarantee for 600Mbps.

If your speed falls below that level, you can claim back a month’s subscription.

Upload speeds are expected to average out at around 90Mbps.

Sky says the new package is aimed at busy homes where multiple people are using lots of devices for intense activities.

“Sky Broadband Gigafast offers WiFi hungry homes the ability to connect lots of devices at any one time,” said Sky’s Aman Bhatti.

Aman described the speeds as “game-changing”.

And he said they would be up to 25 times faster than a standard Sky connection – which is around 36Mb/s.

Sky says you’ll be able to connect over 120 devices at once.

Here’s how Sky’s current line-up looks in terms of average speeds offered:

Superfast 35 – 36MbpsSuperfast – 59MbpsUltrafast – 145MbpsUltrafast Plus – 500MbpsGigafast – 900Mbps

The catch is that this is a full-fibre package, so you can only get the speeds if you live somewhere with fibre-to-the-property broadband.

Sky told The Sun that FTTP covers about 20% of people across the UK.

The new Gigafast package is also available with the Sky Broadband Boost add-on.

It’s a £5-a-month bundle that guarantees you minimum speeds plus WiFi coverage in every room.

Sky Gigafast costs £55 a month on an 18-month contract, with a £10 activation fee.

The new package available at the same price for new and existing customers from today.

At 900Mbps, you could download a HD TV show in four or five seconds.

But these speeds might be overkill for some customers, so consider a cheaper package if you’re not in a high-usage household.
