“F**k I Don’t Need That” – After UFC 273 War, Khamzat Chimaev Reveals the “Daddy” Issues He Faced Against Gilbert Burns

Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns had the whole VyStar Memorial Arena, in Florida, standing on their feet, as the two put an absolute war. Touted as the ‘people’s main event,’ the bout shook the fans in attendance. A high-paced, back-and-forth bout with two top welterweights lit up the arena.

In an extremely close bout, Khamzat Chimaev got the nod from the judges (29-28×3) and kept his undefeated record. However, Burns took him to places Chimaev had no idea about. Thus, ‘Borz’ found respect for Gilbert Burns.

Chimaev is mentally very tough and doesn’t shy away from a verbal battle. However, in the post-fight interview, Chimaev revealed a pre-fight incident that might have played right into his head.

‘Borz’ said, “Actually, it was a little bit hard for me to fight him because I see his kids. You know, they come to me, ‘hey, you are fighting my daddy.’ I said sh**, f*** I don’t need that. I don’t wanna fight with some ‘daddy’. I need some killer like me.”

Meanwhile, in the fight, after having early success in round one, Burns showed why he was ranked number 2 in the welterweight rankings coming into the fight. The former title challenger survived the early onslaught from the fast starter Chimaev and went to work in the later rounds.

Looking at the intensity of the fight, it’s tough to imagine Chimaev taking the interaction with Burns’ family to the Octagon. However, if he did that, he needs to be extra careful about the mind game aspect of the sport, as his potential next challenger could be Colby Covington.

‘Borz’ took everything ‘Durinho’ could offer and was still standing on his feet at the end of the third round. He was always moving forward in the fight and looked for a finish until the final second. Also, for the first time, he faced a top-ranked adversary inside the Octagon and showed his grit.

The crafty veteran Gilbert Burns had to use all of his tools to put Chimaev in uncomfortable positions. However, it was still not enough, as the Swedish superstar prevailed as the winner at the UFC 273 PPV.
