‘Jennifer Capriati Mug Shot Wasn’t Cool Either’ – Chris Evert Joins Martina Navratilova in Criticizing Venus and Serena Williams’ ‘King Richard’ Movie

The movie ‘King Richard’ has been one of the greatest additions to the ever-growing list of biopics that are being made in recent times. Starring Will Smith in the titular role, the movie traces the life of Richard Williams, Serena and Venus Williams’ father and how he helped shape the fantastic careers of his two daughters. However, the film has received some flak for portraying some incidents in a highly dramatized way, which many think could have been to increase the dramatic effect of the movie. Chris Evert, the 18-time Grand Slam champion also opened up about the same. She pointed out that the way Jennifer Capriati’s mugshot was used was not in the best of interests. “Yes, and the Jennifer Capriati mug shot wasn’t cool either…”

The movie King Richard has done very well in the box office, as Serena Williams and Venus Williams both had been quite certain about the fact that the story needed to be accurate to their story, before the public saw it. But, as is natural, people’s perspective about the same incident might vary and that is what comes out of these criticisms.

Chris Evert speaks about discrepancies in the King Richard movie

Chris Evert is quite active on social media and took to Twitter to make her thoughts known. She retweeted a post which pointed out the factual inaccuracy in the match between Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Venus Williams’ match that had been used in the movie.

To understand the context, you have to understand why Chris Evert made this tweet. This is in reference to how certain aspects of the Williams sisters’ rise to fame have not been depicted correctly in the movie. This was used in the movie to add to the dramatic effect of the film. The incident that the original post talks about the historic match between Venus Williams and the top-seeded player at the 1994 Bank of the West Classic tournament, Vicario.

The movie showed how Vicario had taken a long bathroom break, possibly to hamper Venus’s momentum, as the teenager had already won the first set.

Former star Martina Navratilova said that this was incorrect, and back then, no one took bathroom breaks as it certainly was not a strategy. Navratilova’s friend and rival Evert reiterates the same thing and points out how using Capriati’s mugshot was also in bad taste, given the kind of personal trouble that the American was going through at the time.
