Martin Lewis fans said they used slow cookers to batch cook meals as “saves a fortune”.

The savings come from wasting less food, and you’ve prepped your meals already and won’t be tempted to tuck into a takeaway.

Plus one reader said that it costs just 23p to cook a meal overnight.

The devices are a great way to save energy thanks to the low running costs.

Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch previously told The Sun “Slow cookers are an energy-efficient cooking appliance.

“They use just a little more energy than a traditional light bulb, and you can leave your food to cook slowly throughout the day while you’re at work or when you need to get on with other things.”

Of course it’s worth noting that slow cookers come in different sizes and the the exact cost of running one will depend on this and how long you have it on for.

Plus, if you are testing out your chef skills, different recipes may require different settings, some can be set to as low as 60°C using less electricity than a dish that needs to be cooked at a higher setting like 149°C.

It’s estimated that the average slow cooker uses roughly 1.3kWh over eight hours of cooking time.

We spoke to one savvy saver who slashed his bills by £725 a year by washing clothes at night and using a slow cooker.

And one woman saves £400 a year on her energy bills by bubble wrapping her curtains and cooking at night.

Sue Conlan makes 10 litres of stew and other meals in a huge slow cooker pot twice a week.

It costs her 10p to run her slow cooker at night according to Uswitch, compared to 19p during the day.

She’s on an energy tariff that makes it cheaper to use her appliances at night, saving of 9p every time she uses her slow cooker – which over the year, saves her £9.36.

One council has given slow cookers to hard-up families with kids to help the cook food cheaply and keep energy bills down.

Our Squeeze Team expert Naomi has shared her secrets for slashing your bill at the supermarket checkout.

Her most important piece of advice is to plan your meals.

She said: “It sounds like a very boring thing to do but once you start deciding on the meals you are going to eat in advance, you will instantly see your food bill drop.”

Naomi suggests planning ahead three days of meals to start with, so that if you get bored you can easily swap one meal for another without the food passing its sell-by-date

“Meal planning enables you to know what you’re going to shop for in advance so you can better plan your budget as you’ll know exactly what you’ll need to spend.

“Plus you’ll be able to see if you need to adapt your meal plan in order to spend less.

“You will waste much less food as you will only buy what you actually need.”
