‘Males Around My Age Really Struggle’ – Nick Kyrgios Says It’s Ok to Be Vulnerable Sometimes
It has been an amazing year for Nick Kyrgios, hasn’t it? The Australian tennis star is back, winning the biggest trophy of his career at the Australian Open. Partnering with Thanasi Kokkinakis, the duo won the men’s doubles title at their ‘home’ Grand Slam.
Further, he dug deep at the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters last month. Kyrgios had a quarterfinal finish at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and made a pre-quarterfinal appearance at the Miami Open. Earlier this month, the Australian reached the semifinals in Houston before going down to the eventual champion, Reilly Opelka.
Kyrgios had to battle mental-health-related challenges in the past to reach where he is standing now. At the Miami Open, the 26-year-old revealed how he coped with these challenges.
Nick Kyrgios opens up about mental health
During a post-match interview at the Miami Open, the Australian talked about how he overcame mental-health-related struggles. He said, “Oh well, I just started with the basics honestly, you know, just the people around me, I kind of pushed them away and those are the people that I needed the most, my family. I fell out with my family for a while.”

Further, he added, “I’ve got a really good tight-knit group of people around me and I’m not afraid to open up anymore, you know. I think that’s the biggest thing, I think males around my age really struggle with coming out, you know, it’s a sign of weakness or something if you are struggling mentally. I don’t think that’s the case at all, I think it’s actually a sign of strength in a way to be vulnerable and actually just tackle your problems head-on.”
Concluding his thoughts on mental health, he said, “It’s all good to be, you know, feeling like you’re not enough or anything like that and I feel like that’s the best thing that I did was just admit that I was struggling and now you know, I’m playing some great tennis, happy and that’s it. I’m up here with the man himself.”

Further, Kyrgios had earlier admitted that he would be missing the Roland Garros this year. It has been five years since we last saw Kyrgios at the French Open. In 2017, he lost in the second round against Kevin Anderson. However, Kyrgios hopes to be back at Roland Garros in 2023.
