‘My Body Needs Rest’ – Romanian Player Withdraws From the Billie Jean Cup After Suffering From a Medical Ailment

Romanian player, Elena-Gabriela Ruse has been visibly struggling physically for the past few months on the tour.

Ruse began her 2022 season with early-round losses at Melbourne Summer Set 1, Sydney International, and the Australian Open. Following a major illness, Elena had to be on antibiotics just to compete at the Dubai Open. Even though she was on the path to recovery medically, the after-effects of the illness were visible at the Sunshine Doubles. Struggling with health, Elena faced a first-round exit in Indian Wells and a second-round exit in Miami. Despite pushing herself to compete at the Charleston Open, lack of rest took its toll on Elena, and suffered an agonizing 3-6, 0-6 defeat in her tournament opener.

Following her struggle in Charleston, Elina decided to get herself examined. Upon examination, the Romanian star learned about inflammation in her heart.

I started feeling better towards Miami, although I was struggling to push for more than two games at a time.”

Talking about Charleston Open, Gabriela confessed that by the time she started her clay-court campaign, she had started feeling slow, and robbed of energy. She also revealed that she could not withstand the high intensity build up during the extended plays.

Considering the medical reports and lack of energy she felt during the tournaments, Gabriela Ruse asserted that her body needs utmost rest and a staged return to physical effort. She further announced her withdrawal from the Billie Jean Cup, set to begin from 15th April.

“My body needs rest and a staged return to physical effort. I have had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from the Billie Jean Cup and be out of competition for the coming weeks.”
