I never got over being bullied for a birthmark on my face – now I’m depressed

DEAR DEIDRE: I WAS bullied in my teens for having a large birthmark on my face.

I saw a counsellor at school who helped me get over the bullying and I felt better.

I went off the rails and began to self-harm

I moved on to university, but I seemed to struggle socially and was anxious most of the time.

I thought that therapy might help me again but the counsellor I contacted recommended anti-depressants and told me to read some self-help books.

The pills made me very emotional. I felt like I was just a number, not an individual – and I became very anxious.

I stopped the sessions because the counsellor was making me feel worse – but I went off the rails and began to self-harm.

I am a 24-year-old woman. I’m better now but I need closure and a therapist I can trust.

DEIDRE SAYS: Bullying is wrong and it was not your fault.

Therapy is often a rewarding experience, but it may take several tries to find your ideal therapist.
