Floyd Mayweather Doubles Down on Former Rival Canelo Alvarez’s Stance on Interim Belts in Boxing
The former five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. can be considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of all time. In a recent interview, Mayweather was seen addressing his displeasure with interim belts in boxing.
Mayweather was talking on the call with Ben Thompson from FightHype.
In conversation, Mayweather was comparing himself to Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Robinson, and how he has beaten more champions than they have.
He also addressed his issue with interim belts. He said, “If you look nowadays in the top ten, everybody’s got a belt now. I never won an ‘interim’ belt. I feel like it’s too many belts in the sport of boxing. So the sport of boxing is really watered down now. Everybody is champion.”

However, Mayweather was quick to mention why he thought so. He further added, “I’m not knocking any fighter. I’m only talking about me. I’ve never won a vacant though. Every time I won a belt, I beat the champion for the belt.”
Floyd Mayweather was not the only one
Mayweather’s participation in multiple high profile championships has cemented his position as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. It comes as no surprise that Mayweather would express his issues with interim belts.
However, Mayweather was not the only fighter who had a problem with interim belts. The undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez, had also previously addressed his concerns with interim belts.

Alvarez mentioned that there should every weight class should have only one champion, and that other interim champions should be discarded.
In a conversation with Boxing Scene, Alvarez talked about getting rid of belt confusions in boxing. He said, “Everybody wants to have (a belt). Everybody complains, but all fighters want to have a world title. There’s no reason to create politics out of it.”
He further added, “There should be one single champion per weight class.”
