The hidden detail in the Starbucks logo everyone misses – which makes the woman ‘more approachable’

THE Starbucks logo has a hidden detail that is easily missed by even the brand’s most frequent coffee drinkers.

Between her long curly hair and warm, approachable smile, the Starbucks logo invites customers to come and grab a tasty coffee or pastry.

Since 1971, the logo was a two-tailed mermaid, but as of 2011, they now refer to her as her proper name, a siren, despite the more recent zoomed-in logo not showing off both her tails.

Referring to the design, the creative director at Starbucks Global Creative Studio Director, Steve Murray, said: “It’s the siren. She is not a real person, but we kind of think of her as one. She’s the biggest symbol of our brand, really, other than our partners (employees).

“She’s the face of it.”

Though a two-tailed mermaid might be odd for a coffee company, Starbucks said it makes sense for their brand, as it originated in the port city of Seattle.

They also said that coffee frequently travels overseas to get to them, linking Starbucks to the “seafaring world.”

So, what’s the hidden detail you’ve probably missed after glancing at the siren logo?

Though she might look it, the green creature isn’t quite as perfect as one might think.

Fast Company reported that the logo’s face is actually asymmetrical, though most customers would never notice such detail.


Why would the Starbucks team want to purposely make their logo imperfect?

Global branding team Lippincott wanted to make the logo look “more human,” and to do so, they had to take her face from perfect to asymmetrical.

If you look closely, the mythological creature’s nose hangs a bit lower on the right side than on the left by changing just a few pixels in the logo.

According to Fast Company, design partner, Bogdan Geana, said: “In the end, just for the face part of the drawing, there’s a slight asymmetry to it. It has a bit more shadow on the right side of the face.”

“It felt a bit more human, and felt less like a perfectly cut mask.”
