The Kardashians on Hulu: Biggest differences from KUWTK – from breaking the fourth wall to sleeker filming

The Kardashians has finally been released on Hulu, meaning we get another chance to keep up with our favorite family.
The first episode premiered today, and is also available to stream on Disney +, with Kim Kardashian’s sex tape drama and her stint on Saturday Night Live taking centre stage.
We also got a front-row seat to Kourtney Kardashian’s budding romance with Travis Barker, as well as the fall-out from Scott Disick’s leaked DMs.
But, while it’s the same cast viewers have come to know and love, there are a few differences in the new show from the Keeping Up With The Kardashians program that has been on the small screen for over a decade.
Biggest differences in KUWTK and the Kardashians
The style of filming
The first difference that viewers will notice is the sleeker style of filming in the Kardashians.
KUWTK started as a warts-and-all reality series, lifting the curtain on Kim and co in 2007. The filming style matched this, giving us a fly-on-the-wall feeling during some of their biggest moments.
This has changed for the 2022 series, with the iconic Ben Winston serving as executive producer, and the documentary-style feel is noticeably different from the get-go.
The first episode kicked off with a drone shot travelling through their homes and offices as they prepared to have a family BBQ, with jazzy pastel titles re-introducing us to the gang.

Fans have become used to hearing producers ask Kim, Khloe, Kylie et al certain questions in their talking heads, and sometimes we see a glimpse of a camera or a microphone in the background – but this is few and far between.
Things have switched up entirely in The Kardashians, with Kim looking up and addressing the camera while at the family BBQ, joking about the food options available, which threw us all for a loop but felt even more intimate than before.
And, lets be honest, the closest we’ll get to an invite to their gatherings…
Kendall also gave us total Ferris Buller vibes when she jumped into her – very brief – camera interview to explain that she wasn’t able to film because she had Covid-19.

One of the biggest complains of KUWTK was watching the drama unfold on screens, months after it happened in real life or played out on social media – making the episodes instantly outdated, despite giving us a different perspective.
The team behind the Kardashians are making strides to change this, meaning that the episodes will be airing closer to when events happen.
This wasn’t hugely evident in the first episode, which saw Kim announce her SNL hosting stint in September, but she confirmed that this would be the case moving forward.

‘It just feels really current, timewise, from when we started to film to when it airs,’ she said during an appearance on the Ellen Show.
‘[It] kind of goes with the news cycle, if that makes sense, you just kind of see it all in real time.’
The Kardashians is available to stream on Hulu and Disney + now.
