Hard Cell viewers break down in tears over Catherine Tate finale twist

HARD Cell viewers were in floods of tears after a huge finale twist on Catherine Tate’s new Netflix show.

Writer and creator Catherine, 53, plays multiple characters in this prison comedy-drama which has been branded “TV gold” by viewers who have binge watched the series.

The show is a documentary style comedy set in the fictional female prison, HMP Woldsley.

Viewers have praised the comedian for nailing the series and making them cry with laughter throughout and break down in tears in a heartbreaking finale twist.

Catherine plays various characters from Laura Willis, the Governor who believes creativity leads to rehabilitation, to Big Viv, the psychopath lifer.

However, as viewers watched the characters’ stories unfold, it was a shocking twist between the seemingly timid Ange and her fellow inmate Anastasia (Niky Wardley) which got everyone talking.

Ange gave the impression that she was massively out of her depth in prison and had a meek life in the outside world.

But the real revelation is that Ange is actually a villain on the outside and nobody was any the wiser.

Viewers watched Ange cause mayhem in the prison – she was the one who stole the puzzle piece Sal (Caroline Harding) and Cal (Lorna Brown) were missing before they were forced apart.

She the3n swapped the prop knife with a real blade in the musical.

This resulted in Ros inadvertently stabbed Anastasia with the during a scene in the play.

It was most likely an act of revenge for Anastasia having set Ange up to be attacked by Viv.

Viewers were gobsmacked as Ange revealed that she was the mastermind behind it all.

She showed off the fake knife that she had nicked and replaced before CCTV footage showed how she’d managed to convince everyone that she was just an innocent inmate.

The final episode ended with the musical being abandoned halfway as Anastasia was left bleeding on the floor.

Fans of the show could not believe their eyes and raced to Twitter to praise the unexpected ending.

One wrote: “Just watched #HardCell with Catherine Tate and the ending had me shook.”

Another posted: “Catherine Tate is a genius, #HardCell is beautifully written, the cast amazing and she has you laughing and crying. The ending is priceless.”

A third shared: “I absolutely did not expect to be crying so much during this show. #HardCell”

“Made me cry twice for completely different reasons within 90 secs. #HardCell,” another added.

The series is set over a six-week period during which the inmates rehearse a musical directed by ex-EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison.

Rehearsals draw together an oddball collection of women as they find their voices, grow in confidence and strengthen their friendships.

While most of Catherine’s characters are women, the star also transforms into Marco, one of the guards.

The Essex lad is described as someone who “got down to the last 32 on Love Island so he’s got nothing to prove.

“More committed to his appearance than his job, which he only took because he can get to work without changing tubes.”

It sees Catherine swap her long red hair for a short, dark crop, fake tan and designer stubble.

Meanwhile Ange is a timid first timer, and her character description reads: “An innocent, struggling to adapt to her new environment, her meekness making her easy prey.

“But she lives by her mantra “People are inherently good” and despite her misfortune, she overcomes her fears, settles in and even finds her prison walk.”

Elsewhere, Catherine plays Ros, a “bouncy inmate who idolises her mother” and the woman in question, mum Anne-Marie who is “a tough, mean, ex-con, who visits her daughter whenever she has run out of money.

“Contemptuous and scathing, she takes full advantage of her daughter’s unconditional love.”

The comedy marks Catherine’s return to TV comedy, with it being her first series since Nan finished on the BBC in 2015.

Since then she has continued to appear on the small screen as herself or providing her voice to shows including DuckTales and Tom Gates.
