Kamaru Usman Hints Khamzat Chimaev Is Now Ahead of Conor McGregor in UFC Title Shot Pecking Order

UFC welterweight king Kamaru Usman is monitoring the division closely, as he is looking to surpass Georges St-Pierre’s legacy to become the greatest welterweight fighter in the promotion’s history. Also, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is picking on the biggest PPV draw, Conor McGregor, to get a lucrative payday.

In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, the pound-for-pound king talked about Khamzat Chimaev‘s win over Gilbert Burns and his potential next challenger, Leon Edwards. Amidst all the contender discussion, Usman took a cheeky jab at ‘The Notorious‘.

“We’ve kind of got Leon Edwards sitting there. You got the other loudmouth, little kid… what’s the [pretended to forget Conor McGregor’s name]… Irish, Irish kid, you know the Irish guy? You got the Irish guy on the side, running his mouth,” said ‘The Nigerian Nightmare‘.

The surprised reporter said, “The Conor McGregor, Irish guy.”

Usman suggested why names are easy to forget and expressed, “This guy is not relevant. He’s not done anything in the sport as of late. So, in order for him to be relevant, he has to try to attach his name to someone who is relevant.”

Usman has cleared out the division. The Nigerian has been dominant in his title defenses. Apart from Colby Covington, no other welterweight has presented a significant challenge against the pound-for-pound king. Thus, after grinding through the division, Usman looking at a big payday fight against Canelo Alvarez or Conor McGregor makes a ton of sense.

Conor McGregor doesn’t see any threats in Kamaru Usman’s style

The former dual champ in the UFC recently did an interview and presented his case for a contest against the dominating welterweight champion.

McGregor said, “I feel confident against Usman. A Jab-happy, sloppy orthodox wrestler, with no submissions whatsoever. What’s he gonna do, Where is the danger here? I don’t see a danger with him.”

Kamaru Usman is doing a lot of rematches lately. Thus, a challenge like this would be a breath of fresh air for the best fighter in the UFC. However, fighters like Khamzat Chimaev, Vicente Luque, and Belal Muhammad would have some say in the matter.

Thus, it would be interesting to see how UFC President Dana White would tackle the situation in the welterweight division.
