‘I Have a Responsibility’ – Ukrainian Player Dayana Yastremska Breaks Down After Win at Billie Jean King Cup 2022

Ukraine has been under siege for more than 50 days now. Dayana Yastremska opened up about the difficult situation in her country. The difficult situation in Ukraine forced Yastremska and her sister to flee from the country, while their family is still stuck in their home country.

She has promised that whatever she earns from all these matches on the WTA circuit will be redistributed to assist the war effort or support the humanitarian aid that is being provided back in Ukraine.

Why did Dayana Yastremska break down?

Following the US-Ukraine tie at the Billie Jean King Cup, Yastremska opened up about her sentiments for her country and the responsibility of taking care of her younger sister.

“You know, I always been proud of my country and I always been proud that I’m Ukrainian. And I always like to represent my country. But now at this moment, it’s well, it’s tough to describe it. But you know, my heart stays at home, and I really want to go back there. But my mind that is here and I have to play and, I have a responsibility on my sister,” she said, after her win against USA’s Jessica Pegula at the Billie Jean King Cup.

The Ukrainian player, whose level of the game has been picked up ever since the war broke out, won the match 6-3, 6-4.

Yastremska not the only player to support Ukraine

While being native to the country has prompted her to take action to help Ukraine, she also thanked the safe space that WTA has provided her with in order to compete. “It’s just super nice to be in a safe place here and to play in that amazing crowd with a great support. It’s nice to see the Ukrainian flags everywhere,” she added.

Other Ukrainian players have also come to do their bit for the war effort. Elina Svitolina also promised to redistribute her earnings, while retired players like Sergiy Stakhovsky and Alexandr Dolgopolov have taken up arms to defend their country during these turbulent times.
