“Carry Over Some Penalties” – Andy Roddick Says Tennis Should Be Like Soccer

Andy Roddick has been one of the most famous tennis players of the pre-Big Three era. Even though he retired from professional tennis in 2012, he has remained quite active in the circuit, following what is going on, and sharing his two cents.

Recently, he shared his opinion on penalties that a player can incur in a match. He tweeted about his own personal take on how some rules can be tweaked a little to make them more effective.

“I think tennis should be like soccer. You should carry over some penalties throughout the tournament. Coaching penalties are an obvious candidate for rollover,” Roddick tweeted.

For the uninitiated, in soccer, if a player receives a yellow or red card, that penalty is carried forward into the next match he or she plays in the tournament.

Here Roddick possibly makes a subtle reference to allegations of courtside coaching that Stefanos Tsitsipas has been often accused of. This is not a one-off allegation, and for quite some time now, the Greek World No. 5 and his father have been criticized for engaging in this activity, which by rule is not allowed in tennis. The Greek is in the news because of his second consecutive title win at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Kim Clijsters replies to Andy Roddick and his suggestions

Former world no. 1 in the WTA circuit, Kim Clijsters also commented on the tweet by the American 39-year-old.

Clijsters too, much like Roddick, is active in the circuit, even though she is not an active player anymore. The former world No. 1 had been aiming for a comeback recently. Although her last comeback, post motherhood, was path-breaking, her recent attempt in 2020 failed to take off. She finally announced her retirement formally just a few days ago!
