It was the year 2009. Top seed, Rafael Nadal and the second seed, Roger Federer were on a collision course in the title clash of the Australian Open. The Swiss maestro entered the finals high on confidence after recording a straight-sets, comprehensive victory over Andy Roddick.

Further, it was an intriguing and jaw-dropping title clash between Nadal and Federer. In a see-saw battle, Nadal won the opening set before Federer came back into the match to take the second set. Subsequently, the tale repeated as Nadal won the third set before Federer leveled the match at two sets apiece. However, Nadal won the deciding set to clinch his maiden Australian Open title.

It was a tough loss to digest for Federer and his fans. Recently, Monte Carlo Masters runner-up, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, revealed his emotions after that match.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina left in tears when Roger Federer lost to Rafael Nadal

Davidovich Fokina considers Federer as his idol. He grew up watching the Swiss maestro and believes he has a similar personality as Federer. Talking about his emotions during Federer’s tough loss against Nadal in the 2009 Australian Open final, he said, “I cried when he lost in Australia. I cried with him.” The Spaniard believes that he is an emotional person. Earlier, he said, “When I lose a lot of matches, I cry a lot.”

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina played one of his best tournaments at the recently concluded Monte Carlo Masters. He reached the finals of the tournament, before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the summit clash. The young Greek defeated the Spaniard in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (3) in just over an hour and a half.

Nonetheless, the rising Spanish star’s performance in Principality was nothing short of spectacular. Earlier, he had defeated Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, and Grigor Dimitrov to make it to the finals.

His efforts to reach his maiden Masters 1000 final earned him praise from the ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal. Further, Fokina will be determined to continue his amazing form at the Barcelona Open this week. He will kick off his campaign in Barcelona against Hugo Dellien on Tuesday.
