DOWNTOWN Abbey’s Dan Stevens looked worlds away from Matthew Cawley as he rocked his new look at the premiere of his new series Gaslit on Monday.

The 39-year-old stood out from the crowd with his moustache and slicked back hair which was a far cry from his appearance in Downtown Abbey.

Dan is among the cast of the Starz original series alongside the likes of Julia Roberts and Sean Penn – with the political thriller which is set to launch this Sunday.

The actor rocked a colourful and co-ordinated outfit that brought vintage style to the event, donning a multicoloured purple trench coat, along with a matching shirt and trousers.

The dramatic attire was accompanied by a pair of striped mustard and red boots, with Dan having sported a slicked back hairstyle for the red carpet and wearing tinted glasses.

The actor is best known for having played Matthew Crawley in period drama Downton from 2010 to 2012.

His new project Gaslit is once again a historical TV series, with it described as a “modern take on the Watergate scandal,” which had occurred between 1972 and 1974.

It centred on the administration of US President Richard Nixon, which was suspected of being involved with a break-in at the headquarter’s of the rival Democratic National Committee.

The scandal led to the resignation of Nixon, though the upcoming series is said to focus on forgotten individuals of the time and untold stories about those involved.

Gaslit will primarily focus on socialite Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts, who was the wife of Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell, played by Penn.

Mitchell has been referred to as a “Watergate whistleblower,” though it’s understood that efforts were made to discredit her at the time of the scandal in the 1970s.

Stevens plays attorney John Dean, who was involved in the scandal, with Betty Gilpin playing his wife Mo Dean in the new project, to be released later this week.

Other cast members include Shea Whigham, Darby Camp and Aleksandar Filimonović. It’s unclear if anyone will played Nixon in the upcoming TV series about the scandal.
