‘It Was Special to Finish Here’ – Fans React as Former World Number 5 Tommy Robredo Calls an End to His Illustrious Career at Barcelona Open

Spanish tennis has given some exceptional players over the last three decades. From Carlos Moya to Rafael Nadal to David Ferrer and in more recent times, Carlos Alcaraz, these players have enthralled tennis fans across the globe. Amongst them was Tommy Robredo, the former World Number 5. At a time when his compatriots, Nadal and Ferrer, were ruling men’s tennis, Robredo was quietly carving a niche for himself.

Although his best result at Grand Slams has been a quarterfinal finish in men’s singles, Robredo consistently enjoyed a deep run across big tournaments. Further, he has been a part of Spain’s three Davis Cup victorious campaigns and has won 12 ATP titles in men’s singles. Additionally, he also has five ATP doubles titles to his credit

Yesterday, Robredo announced an end to his career lasting close to 25 years. He was in Barcelona this week to participate at the Barcelona Open in his native country. However, his campaign was cut short by his compatriot, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, in the first round, losing 1-6, 1-6 in the final match of his career.

The Barcelona Open has always been a special tournament for Robredo. He had some memorable victories at this tournament. Earlier in his career, it was this very tournament where he earned his maiden ATP Tour win as a 16-year-old. Moreover, he won the title here in 2004.
