McLaren Boss Snubs Mercedes Counterpart Regarding Audi-Porsche F1 Entry: “A Perfect Marriage”

In recent times, there have been reports of solid interest from Audi to enter the world of F1. They initially sought a deal with McLaren. However, McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl now has had an interesting opinion on the matter.

He shares the opinion that Sauber would be a better team to form a partnership for the auto-world giant.

Andreas Seidl thinks Audi-Sauber is an ideal match

The current McLaren team boss has previously worked closely with the Volkswagen group after heading their Porsche WEC program. Seidl has only recently seen his team reject a reported €650 million bid from Audi who like Porsche want to join F1.

He believes that it is time for Sauber, which has been racing under the Alfa Romeo name, to join hands with Audi. He said, “Audi and Sauber would be a very good choice for the future, a perfect marriage.”

Seidl also added, “The Swiss have an excellent infrastructure with their wind tunnel and would be ready for such a challenge.” However, he also thinks that the deal could be susceptible to the similar issues that marred the Audi-McLaren deal.

Shedding light on the matter, he said. “I think a lot depends on the owners of the team. How much is the Rausing family willing to leave behind?”.

However, his Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff is still on the fence about the idea. He said, “And who declares themselves as newcomers… The picture is still very unclear.”

How has McLaren done so far this season?

This season was set up to be a promising one for McLaren. However, it has not gone all to plan with the team looking massively off the pace of their predicted competitors in the opening races of the season. The season opener saw neither Daniel Ricciardo nor Lando Norris finish in the points.

The second race in Jeddah was a mixed bag, with Ricciardo retiring as he lost drive in his MCL36 while Norris went on to finish P7. However, the last race in Australia saw a revival with Norris in P5 and Ricciardo in P6.
