If it suddenly feels like 2002 again, that’s because The Cheeky Girls have made an unexpected comeback.

The pop stars – sisters Gabriela and Monica Irima – have released a brand new single, Let’s Have Fun, 20 years since they made their famous debut on Popstars: The Rivals.

In a nod to their debut single, The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum), the duo’s new banger was written by their beloved mum Margit, so you can expect similar vibes.

Announcing their comeback on Twitter, the Romanian sisters said: ‘Hi Guyz, please check out our new song.. It is released on all platforms Let’s Have Fun…XX!’

Lyrics include: ‘We just want to have fun, cheeky- cheeky. Two of us is better than one, mm-mm. We just want to have twice as much fun, two of us is better than one.’

The Cheeky Girls, now 39, were introduced to the world on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 where they quickly became popular with audiences.

They may have lost out to Girls Aloud that year – yes, it truly was an iconic series – but The Cheeky Girls won on the charts with their breakout hit, Cheeky Song, peaking at number two on the UK charts.

It was followed by the singles Take Your Shoes Off and (Hooray, Hooray!) It’s A Cheeky Holiday, both of which reached number three.

Their first album, 2003’s PartyTime, impressively soared to number three, but their second album, In My Mind (Is A Different World – A Cheeky One), failed to chart in 2007.

As for their personal lives, Gabriela was engaged to Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik but they split in 2008 just three months after he proposed.

In 2016, Monica married her fiance of four years, Shaun Taylor.

Having bowed out of the public eye, the Cheeky Girls have found ‘normal’ jobs and both work for car dealerships.

Monica previously said in an interview: ‘I think the British public have a perception that if you are, or have been, in the public eye or a pop star, you’re not allowed to try something else.

‘I always said it’s no shame to work, it’s a shame not to work.

‘We’ve chosen another career path and we are very, very proud of it.’

She added: ‘I’ve got a passion for cars, so it’s not just the selling bit, but I like the buzz of selling and making people happy.’
