Iga Swiatek has been having a great time on the tour so far. Her 2022 has been fantastic, to say the least! She won three back-to-back  Masters 1000 and rose to the No. 1 spot following the retirement of Ashleigh Barty. Last weekend, she also helped her country to the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. Recently, she won her Round-of-16 match at the Stuttgart Open, dominating her unseeded opponent, Eva Lys 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour.

Her streak started in Qatar this year, and she has been dominating the scene so far. With her win over Lys, she joined a unique record alongside Serena and Venus Williams.

Journey to Iga Swiatek’s record

Following her dominating victory over the 20-year-old German opponent on Wednesday, Swiatek became the third-youngest player behind Venus Williams and Serena to win more than 20 consecutive matches on the WTA tour.  The current record is held by Venus Williams who had a 35-match streak in 2000, while her sister won 21 straight matches in 2002.

At the Australian Open 2022, Swiatek reached the semifinals, where she lost to Danielle Collins. After that, she stumbled at the Dubai Tennis Championships, suffering an early exit. However, since then she has been veritably unstoppable.

She then took part in the Qatar Open and won the title by defeating Anett Kontaveit in the finals. Since then she has not lost a single match. She won the Miami Open and the Indian Wells Masters to achieve the very difficult Sunshine Double. In the process, she also defeated top players like Maria Sakkari and Naomi Osaka.

After her back-to-back 1000 masters, she also led her country to the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup, winning back-to-back matches. In her tournament opener in Stuttgart, the Pole breezed past Lys to record her 20th consecutive win on the tour, joining Serena and Venus in a unique record on the women’s tour.

Speaking to a WTA insider she said, “When I’m focused & really concentrating on the tasks I have on court & on tactics, nothing changes. I’m pretty happy about that b/c I didn’t know how I’m going to react to being World No.1. But matches at BJK Cup & here, they showed me I can be the same kind of player,”.
