I’m a fashion expert – what your favourite go-to jewellery says about you and why name necklaces scream attention

NO outfit is complete without some kind of jewellery, whether it’s a pair of dangly earrings or a dainty ring.

We all have a go-to we feel almost naked without – and according to a fashion expert, this is because your favourite piece of jewellery, just like garments, makes a statement about who you are.

From fun-loving to more reserved and sticking to traditional norms, Fabulous spoke to Gabrielle Teare to learn what a person’s jewellery can tell about them and their character.

SIZE IS EVERYTHING

When it comes to purchasing jewellery, the expert, who’s been featured in some of the biggest names in the industry, including Marie Claire, Esquire, Elle France and Vogue, claimed there are two factors that determine the buyer’s choice.

These, Gabrielle explained, are our fashion style and scale, with the latter being ”super important”.

”Scale is the size of your bone structure so it is determined by height, weight and wrist bone size.”

This, in turn, means that a person taller than 5’8”, with larger wrists or simply a heavier frame, suit bigger jewellery.

”So when you see a woman with broad shoulders who is above 5’8” tall wearing small earrings or necklace, they look unconfident,” said Gabrielle, adding that it also cheapens the look.

”Contrast this with the magnificent jewels worn on the red carpets the size conveys luxury and confidence.

”Those of us who love to be looked at, to be glamourous will wear bold colours, designs, fitted styles and … oversized or large jewellery. Confidence abounds.”

DAINTY JEWELLERY

Small but mighty, fine jewellery – whether a pair of small earrings, a delicate anklet or a light, elegant necklace – has become all the rage in the recent years.

If you constantly find yourself returning to the favourite boutique to purchase yet another dainty set or piece, you’re quite like Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.

”Kate often wears small discrete earrings and necklace, mid length skirts and darker colours and hence can look older.

”This is because Kate has a natural classic fashion style, so Kate prefers small, discrete, subtle and expensive.”

BIG JEWELLERY

In stark contrast, larger pieces, like chunky statement earrings or a bright, colourful necklace, means the wearer’s more confident, creating glamour and a sense of fun.

Here, Gabrielle pointed out, Megan Markle is a great example.

”She has a more dramatic fashion style.  The white trouser suit, flared trousers and big jewels are all expressing her love of drama.”

ENGAGEMENT AND WEDDING RINGS

From larger rings worth thousands blinding our eyes to more simple and less in your face, engagement and wedding rings are a must to many.

But the size of the ring can also tell a lot about the person who’s wearing it.

”Everyone will have their chosen favourite but they are determined by your innate fashion style.

”Classics love solitaires and simple bands of smaller stones.

”Dramatics love “rocks” – the bigger the better!

”Romantics will choose flower shapes, antiques or pearl rings,” said Gabrielle.

NAME NECKLACES

Name necklaces, particularly in gold, seem to have been all the rage over the last few seasons, with virtually almost everyone rocking one.

But as popular and sought-after as these are, the stylist couldn’t quite understand the obsession, comparing them to name tags.

”Am I dog?” she said.

”This is the choice of someone who likes themselves and is proud of who they are and their name.”

Reflecting on this jewellery a bit more, Gabrielle also thought it could be a ploy, a clever trick to get others to chat them up.

NO JEWELLERY

While some love to decorate themselves in layers of necklaces, rings and anklets, there are also plenty of those who will never buy a piece of jewellery.

For Gabrielle – whose favourite go-to is anything with diamonds (this, she explained, is because she’s an Aries) – this means the person doesn’t care about themselves and is not willing to invest in their appearance.

Here, the expert mentioned it’s a particularly common thing amongst British women who rarely glam up – because the men don’t know how to compliment.
