Jessica Andrade made a successful return to the division where she once was a queen. At UFC Vegas 52, the Brazilian piled on the pressure from the very start and pulled off the rarest of submissions. The first round standing arm triangle submission against Amanda Lemos showed how strong she was in the clinch.
This was a rare first-time submission. But, what was this submission pulled off by Jessica Andrade, and why is it so rare in the UFC?
What is a standing arm-triangle submission?
A standing arm triangle is nothing but a normal arm-triangle position. However, instead of it being on the mat, the modified version is pulled off while both fighters are up on their feet. Since the choke needs a lot of strength, it is very tough to finish an opponent standing.
Fight fans have seen the arm-triangle and the brutality of it inside the Octagon, but Jessica Andrade pulling off the submission was the first occurrence of it in the UFC.

Why standing arm triangles are rare in UFC?
As aforementioned, the arm triangles require a lot of strength. Fighters trying it in the standing position often lose the grip as the other fighters can lean back and try to escape, also they have more limbs free to use in the standing position.
In addition, the fighter put in the grip usually falls to the mat, trying to escape from the position. Consequently, this submission is very hard to pull off while standing.
