Netflix’s Heartstopper viewers all say the same thing as legendary actress makes shock cameo

HEARTSTOPPER is all anyone’s been talking about over the past week, and fans of the Netflix series were stunned to see a familiar face in its cast.

The brand-new coming-of-age series dropped on the streaming service on Friday, 22 April, and has been widely praised.

Heartstopper follows the story of Charlie (Joe Lock), a 14-year-old who develops a crush on a popular rugby player called Nick (Kit Connor), and is adapted by writer Alice Oseman from her graphic novel of the same title.

The series is already in Netflix’ most watch titles, and has been hailed a ‘game-changer’ and the platform’s ‘best series ever’, gaining a 100 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans have been going wild on Twitter, praising the show and its inclusivity.

One wrote: “I’ve never seen such beautiful LGBT representation on tv before.

“I couldn’t stop watching and was brought to tears with how real it felt.

“Incredible job to everyone that worked on this. And obviously 1000% recommend to everyone”.

Another said: “The portrayals and the storyline perfectly represented the LGBTQIA+ Community.

“How we struggle to fit in just to be accepted by other people, or how we struggle to find love knowing that someone like us can’t barely find our own Nick Nelson.

#HeartstopperNetflix is the best show!”

Olivia Colman plays Nick’s mum on the show

As well as praise for the show, many of the show’s fans Tweeted that they couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw who played Nick’s mum in the show.

Netflix cast none-other than Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman for the role.

One wrote: “Another person tweeted: “the fact that they brought olivia colman in #heartstopper even for just a small mother role, made the whole series cuter & perfect!!!”

Another gushed: “I didn’t know Olivia Colman was in this?! What a TREAT.”

The show’s creator, Alice Oseman and executive producer Patrick Walters had been gunning for Olivia to play the role, but they weren’t confident they’d manage it.

They recently revealed to Digital Spy that due to Olivia’s hectic and in-demand filming schedule, they didn’t know if it would be possible.

Oseman told the publication: “So we had this grand idea that we wanted to get a big name to be Nick’s mum. I thought this was the silliest idea ever.”

“I thought there was absolutely no way that any big-name actor would want to be in this show, but we came up with a list of potential Nick’s mums, and Olivia Colman was our favourite. So we went out to her first.”

She continued: “We sent her some excerpts from the scripts, and the comics as well.

I think it was Euros (Lyn, the director), actually, who reached out to her, because they’d worked together before. And she said yes!”

The creator admitted she “100 per cent thought this was not going to happen.”

Walters added: “It was such a shock when she said yes. I remember speaking to her agent, and just being like, ‘Really?’

“It was unbelievable. But she’s amazing, and she was so lovely.”

Heartstopper is streaming on Netflix now.

Olivia was somewhat of a pipe-dream for the show’s bosses, who were overjoyed when she wanted to join the cast
