Spring Awakening: When does the HBO documentary premiere?

Jonathan Groff and the rest of the cast from the acclaimed Broadway musical, Spring Awakening, are reuniting for a one-time-only television documentary titled Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known.

When does Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known premiere?

Original Spring Awakening actress, Lauren Pritchard, first teased a reunion of the original cast in January 2021.

While speaking to People, Lauren revealed: “I had this very vivid dream that we all got back together for a one-night-only concert.”

“We did it as a benefit concert, and it was filmed, and we were all there.”

She added of former co-star Jonathan Groff’s part in the reunion: “So I called Jonathan the next day, and I say, ‘Groff, I had this amazing vivid dream.’ Why can’t we do a one-night-only concert?”

After the two went back and forth on reunion ideas, Lauren mentioned: “Everyone said yes immediately and by the end of January we had everyone finally reconnected.”

The reconnection among the cast came to fruition months later.

In November 2021, the original Spring Awakening cast took the Broadway stage one more time to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the play’s premiere.

15 years earlier, the production first opened on Broadway in December 2006 and landed eight Tony Awards at the following year’s ceremony.

On May 3, 2022, fans of the award-winning play will no longer have to wait to see the original cast reunite.

The 15-year anniversary special is the center of discussion in the HBO documentary, Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known.

HBO customers and HBO Max subscribers can catch the documentary special by viewing or streaming at 9pm EST on Tuesday, May 3.

Are the original Spring Awakening cast members in the documentary?

In addition to Lauren Pritchard and Jonathan Groff, the roster of actors from the original run of Spring Awakening are set to be featured in the HBO documentary.

Returning for the TV special is Lea Michele, who went on to act in Glee and Scream Queens.

Lea told People of acting again with her former co-stars: “If you were able to see Spring Awakening at the Atlantic Theater, you got to see something very special.”

“We, of course, loved our show and loved playing our characters, but the real fun we had was offstage together.”

The actress shared more details of the experience: “In my mind, I was like, ‘This is never going to happen.’”

“The power of Jonathan and Lauren and our mutual love and respect for them as a cast, it was this impossible thing that they made possible.”

“To have the opportunity 15 years later to reconnect and reintroduce ourselves to each other as adults having grown and lived so much life was really so healing and wonderful for us.”
