Marcelo trotted out onto the pitch with his team-mates, seemingly without a care in the world.

But his face fell when it was pointed out to him that he’d trodden on City’s pitchside badge.

When Eder Militao informed him of what he’d done, the Brazilian put his hands on his head in disappointment.

Marcelo’s pal and compatriot Vinicius Jr appears to also be deeply superstitious about these things.

Benzema leaves Twitter drooling with Panenka for Real Madrid vs Man City

Back in January, he leapt of over Real Madrid’s pitchside badge during a game against Valencia.

And it appears to be becoming a common theme with footballers.

During Atletico Madrid’s quarter-final trip to the Etihad, Luis Suarez carefully avoided stepping on City’s badge.

While Cristiano Ronaldo did the same thing at Atletico during the round of 16.

Marcelo’s fears may have been becoming a reality a day later, when Man City raced out the blocks at the Etihad.

Kevin De Bruyne headed home Riyad Mahrez’s cross after just two minutes to give his side the perfect start.

And Gabriel Jesus profited on some poor David Alaba defending to make it 2-0 on 11 minutes.

Karim Benzema finished brilliantly to pull one back for Madrid not long after the half hour – with City going in at half-time 2-1 up.

Phil Foden restored their two-goal advantage on 53 minutes – only for Vinicius Jr to score brilliantly almost immediately.

Bernardo Silva rifled home to put City 4-2 up, but Benzema’s cool penalty saw the frenetic match finish 4-3.
