In celebration, Davis paid homage to Michael Jordan, by using his classic shrug as a sign of victory.

The Michael Jordan shrug game

The Chicago Bulls star, Michael Jordan, used his iconic shrug in the 1992 NBA Finals, against Portland Trail Blazers. And, in doing so, Jordan created one of the most memorable moments in NBA history.

Jordan had connected on six three-pointers in the first half, after which he made the paradigmatic move. However, the 10-part documentary series ‘The Last Dance‘, gave a rather intriguing back story on why Jordan made the move.

In the days leading to the 1992 NBA finals, Jordan and the Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Clyde Drexler were considered the best players in their position. In fact, Drexler was actually considered one of Jordan’s biggest rivals for the ‘Best Player’ title.

This, however, did not sit well with the gladiatorial Jordan. And Jordan made it an arbitrary mission of sorts to defeat Drexler.

American writer David Halberstam described Jordan’s agenda to beat Drexler, in his New York Times bestseller, ‘Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the world he made‘. Halberstam said, “It was as if Jordan had a terrible personal vendetta against Drexler. If it was not personal, it most certainly looked that way. Jordan barely let Drexler touch the ball on offense.”

Many other NBA players also mimicked Jordan’s shrug.

Former Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose made the iconic move after scoring a three-pointer against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Similarly, LA Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant also mimicked Jordan’s shrug, after scoring a point against the Memphis Grizzlies.
