“Defense Wins Championships”: NFL Twitter Reacts to a Defense Dominating Round 1 in 2022 NFL Draft

What a great start to the 2022 NFL draft. Thursday’s first round began with five straight defensive players getting selected. Interestingly, it is the first time since 1991 that all the top five picks are on the defensive side of the ball.

It happened for the second time in a row the Jacksonville Jaguars selected the first round, first overall pick. While the free agency and trade market witnessed receivers and offensive players bagging lucrative deals, the draft happens to be quite opposite, with defensive players an attractive choice for the franchises.

Indeed, this year’s draft was quite surprising for the fans, as well as experts who speculated wide receivers and tight ends to be the front-runners. Jacksonville Jaguars kick-started the event by selecting Georgia defensive lineman Travon Walker with the No. 1 pick. Soon the Detroit Lions went after Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson at No. 2.

The Houston Texans were the third club to choose and maintained the trend going at No. 3 by drafting LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. The fourth and the fifth pick were selected by the New York teams. The Jets went for Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, and the Giants selected Oregon edge rusher, Kayvon Thibodeaux.

However, the Carolina Panthers broke the defensive streak. The NFC South team picked NC State tackle Ickey Ekwonu at No. 6. As soon as the news broke out, NFL’s top-tier cornerbacks and other defensive players reacted to the moment.

Los Angeles Rams’ Jalen Ramsey was the first person to comment. “2 corners back to back in the Top5, SHEESH THAT’S LIVE” Ramsey tweeted on Thursday, while the draft was streaming live.

While the top 5 players were from the defensive side, a similar trend was seen in the 1991 NFL draft

The first six picks of the 1991 NFL draft were defensive players

Every year, the NFL draft is an eventful occasion for the fans. As per the ongoing trend, quarterbacks and wide receivers are mostly picked in the top 5 of the first round of the draft. But in the 1991 NFL Draft, things took a step further after franchises began hunting for defensive players.

The Dallas Cowboys went for DT Russell Maryland as the first-overall pick. Later, Cleveland Browns picked DB Eric Turner, and Atlanta Falcons selected DB Bruce Pickens as the third overall pick.

LB Mike Croel and DB Todd Lyght were drafted by the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams respectively. For the sixth overall, the Phoenix Cardinals selected DT Eric Swann into the roster. It will be interesting to see how the 2022 draft progresses with many more rounds to take place. This year’s draft will conclude by 30th April.
