Five ways to save on hiking from free walking apps to deals on boots

WANT some free bank holiday fun? Try getting out into nature for some exercise.

Recent studies suggest that middle-aged people should be aiming for 12,000 steps a day, rather than the 10,000 target that has been touted for years.

Want some free bank holiday fun? Try getting out into nature for some exercise.

With spring in full swing, get fit for less with these fab free walking apps . . .

STEP TO IT: Download the Go Jauntly app for walking tours based on your location.

Photo guides point out interesting bits and help you navigate.

Plus, you can add your own photos and notes and sign up to walking challenges or join in on circular routes.

DON’T STRESS

Brits favourite stress busters revealed – from chocolate to a puzzle

MAP IT OUT: Get Map My Walk and you can track your route, distance, pace, speed, elevation and calories burned.

You can also sync it with Fitbits or other wearable fitness tech. Do it with a friend and you can share your progress — and together you can really have a clear summer fitness goal in mind.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS: No Fitbit? No problem. You can still use its app. Simply monitor your steps with the motion sensor in your phone — just pop it into a pocket or bumbag when walking.

Select the “no Fitbit yet” option and you can still see route, time, distance etc.

METER BY METER: The Walkmeter app is a fun tool to help you on your walking workout.

It helpfully links to Google Maps and you can even set it to “race”, if you’re trying to do the same route a bit quicker, so you can compare.

It’s a bit more advanced and can track terrain and heart rate but it’s a great app if you’re already a 10k-stepper and you want to progress.

PUT THE BOOT IN: If you’re taking your steps seriously, you’ll need the gear. Luckily there are some very affordable footwear ranges available right now.

At Shoezone, the Ascot Shadow men’s lace-up hiking trainers are £29.99, while its boots start at £39.99.

Meanwhile at sportsdirect. com you can find boots reduced to £18 in its sale.

All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
