I am a woman trapped in a man’s body – what can I do?

DEAR DEIDRE: FOR as long as I can remember, I’ve felt trapped in the wrong body.

I know I’m a woman but I have grown up as a man.

I don’t want my true self to stay hidden away forever

I am now 22 and sick of lying to everyone I love about my true identity.

I live at home with my parents and am terrified they will kick me out if I “come out”.

The only time I can truly be myself is when I take the afternoon off work, check into a hotel and dress up in women’s clothes and make-up.

Everyone thinks I’m a masculine bloke who likes rugby and drinking pints. But that’s not the real me. It’s a mask.

If I come out, people will be shocked and I’m scared they will all reject me.

Yet I need to become the woman I was meant to be. What can I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: It must feel very isolating. But there are people who can help you, who will understand what you are going through and how to best approach telling other people.

Coming out is scary. Some might be shocked but those who love you should understand and accept you as you are.
