James Corden has announced he would be stepping down from the Late Late Show in 2023, and a move to Doctor Who has already been teased.

The presenter and actor, 43, confirmed his last instalment of the American talk show would come to an end next year

He plans to move back to the UK after spending nearly a decade in the US with his family.

Of course, there is already wide speculation about what the Gavin and Stacey creator might be set to do next – and some people think they’ve figured it out.

James’ fellow US talk show host Stephen Colbert started speculation James could be set to replace Jodie Whittaker on Doctor Who when she leaves later this year.

He tweeted: ’Congratulations, James, on what will be eight incredible years at CBS. 12:30 won’t be the same without you.

‘But looking forward to your exciting adventures as the new Doctor Who!’

Although it seems likely Stephen’s comments were just a joke – and intended to get a reaction – some Doctor Who fans took it quite seriously indeed.

One wrote: ‘Corden is leaving the late, late show the same year Russell t. davies is coming back to doctor who…interesting.’

Another shared: ‘Wait… Russell t davies is coming back to doctor who again in 2023. and James Corden is leaving in 2023… OH GOD PLS NO!!!’

‘James Corden being the next doctor as incredibly unlikely as it has still put the fear of God into me like genuinely,’ someone else said.

A social media user weighed in: ‘I know people are just joking, but James Corden taking over as the Doctor would absolutely get me to stop watching Doctor Who.’

There were some fans who seemed keener, with someone sharing: ‘Wait really? He’s going to be the new doctor who? He’ll kill it. Congrats!’

A fan added: ‘James Corden being the next doctor is actually so slay.’

So, mixed feelings then.

Fans of the long-running sci-fi show will know James has appeared in two episodes of the programme before, playing Craig Owens, a flatmate of Matt Smith’s Doctor.

Russell T. Davies will return to the helm as showrunner next year, and speculation over who might replace Jodie as The Doctor is through the roof.

It’s not the only show James is linked with making a comeback, with some fans convinced he’ll be back for more Gavin and Stacey – after a very dramatic Christmas special in 2019.

Doctor Who returns later this year to BBC One.
