New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals Suffer Player Suspensions After Incident in Final Game of Series
The New York Mets have been unfortunate this season. Featuring an all-time high hit-by-pitch count, the Mets’ batters have been under tremendous pressure. And in the last game of their series against the St. Louis Cardinals, those emotions just about overflowed.
With the Mets’ reliever, Yoan López on the mound, Nolan Arenado got a pitch up high while at home plate. Not happy with the wayward delivery, Arenado then talked back to the pitcher, sparking a bench-clearing scuffle. The league gave Arenado a 2-game suspension while several other players faced fines.
The New York Mets lead MLB in batters’ hit-by-pitch counts in 2022. With 19 instances recorded so far, the Mets have a cushion of 6 more than the next highest count in the league. And with the roles being flipped just before the instance, emotions were bound to flow over. Both teams suffered from suspensions and fines due to the incident.
The incident – How did it happen?
With the New York Mets trailing the Cardinals 10-5 at the bottom of the 8th, Yoan López, drilled one up around Arenado’s helmet. And while he ducked out of the way, he got up quickly and started a verbal exchange with the pitcher. It got quite heated as the two went out at each other; enough for the benches to clear and hurry onto the diamond.
While the incident ultimately had no punches thrown, it is still undesirable. The fines and suspensions imposed are to help the league keep the players in check.
The league handed Nolan Arenado a two-game suspension for his actions on the field. Joining him on the suspension list is also Cardinals pitcher Génesis Cabrera, who sent JD Davis to first on a hit-by-pitch of his own. The suspensions remain open to appeal for both Arenado and Cabrera. And the two could continue on the roster even as the appeals remain pending.

The Mets didn’t get off easy either. Lopez received an undisclosed fine along with Arenado and Cabrera. The Cardinals’ Jack Flaherty and Met’s Taijuan Walker also received fines to close out the incident. Baseball is a sport, and emotions will run high. But an athlete can keep calm when all around him erupts.
