The Queen Retains Her Throne – Katie Taylor Scores a Scintillating Victory Against Amanda Serrano
The stage at Madison Square Garden was set, for what is now called the ‘biggest women’s fight of all time’. Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor marked her return to the ring to fight the unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano.
The battle of the titans was truly a sight to behold. Their spectacular performances paved the way for one of the best fights in the history of women’s boxing.
Taylor came to the ring with a stellar winning streak of 20-0-0. She was last seen in the ring on December 11, 2021, where she faced Firuza Sharapova at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, where Taylor was declared the winner by ‘unanimous decision’.

Meanwhile, Serrano came to the ring as the more experienced fighter of the two. She had an impressive record of 42-1-1, with a whopping 30 knockouts. Serrano’s last tango in the ring was on December 18, 2021. She faced Miriam Gutierrez at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, where she was declared the winner by ‘unanimous decision’.

The fight was truly a historic moment, as it was the first female fight to headline at Madison Square Garden.
The thunderous cheering from the crowds welcomed Serrano when she made her grand entrance. However, the crowd’s enthusiasm for Taylor’s entry nearly brought the roof down.

Michael Griffin was the referee for the fight.
The bout started strong, with Serrano being the forward fighter, and being more on the offensive. However, Taylor was successful in her defense. And Serrano had limited success in landing punches.
The next three rounds saw both the fighters pacing themselves, trying to judge their opponents. Taylor kept moving and ‘headhunting’. But Serrano came out as the stronger fighter, bringing the rounds in her favor.

There was a complete change in Serrano’s demeanor during the 5th and 6th rounds. She went on a completely offensive rampage. Moreover, Serrano was more in control, even taking Taylor to the ropes a few times.
Serrano showcased her technical prowess in these rounds. She attacked Taylor with a brutal barrage of combinations, heavily injuring her. Notably, Serrano landed a whopping 44 punches in the round.
However, Taylor picked up pace in the last three rounds. And she focused on her fantastic footwork and combinations to bring the rounds in her favor. Both fighters had an equal matchup.

At the end of the 10 rounds, two of the three judges graded in favor of Taylor, making her the winner by split decision.
