Where Is Matteo Berrettini Ranked in the World?

Matteo Berrettini is slowly and steadily becoming a player to be looked out for. Turning pro in 2015, the Italian started climbing the ladder of success by playing tournament after tournament. After 3 years of complete dedication and hard work, Matteo finally made it to the Top 100 in 2018. Not showing any signs of slowing down, early next year, Berrettini entered the Top 50.

Taking one step at a time, Berrettini slowly climbed the ladder of success and has today become a strong competitor for the top players. Last year, he gave a tough fight to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. This year, 2022, the 26-year-old caught light for his highly impressive performance at the Australian Open where he reached the semifinals.

He also reached the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro. Keeping his impressive performances in mind, a question arises: ‘ Where is Berrettini ranked in the world?’

The current ranking of Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini started his year as the World No. 7. Kicking off the year at the ATP Cup, Berrettini won just one of the three matches he played. Maintaining his rank, he next entered the Australian Open. Unlike the ATP Cup, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist raised his game for the major. During his massive tournament campaign, he beat players like Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Gael Monfils, before finally falling to the mighty game of Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.

Even though the loss took away his chance of winning his maiden Grand Slam, it did have something big for the Italian left in the bag. With the Australian Open ending on 30th January, the ATP released its updated rankings on 31st. As per the updated rankings, Berrettini was now the World No. 6.

With aspirations to elevate his ranking, Matteo tried his luck in Rio de Janeiro, Acapulco, and Indian Wells. However, failing to match his Australian Open performance, Berrettini hasn’t been able to climb up the ranking the way he had been wishing for.

As per the latest ATP rankings released on 25th April, 2022, Berrettini remains the World No. 6.

Berrettini likely to miss the 2022 Roland Garros

Following his 4th round loss in Indian Wells, Berrettini pulled out from the Miami Open after suffering a right-hand injury. Going further, he also announced his withdrawal from the three clay Masters tournaments (i.e. Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome). Following his withdrawal announcements, Berrettini recently announced that his French Open presence remains in question.

He said, “I don’t want to rush anything, I will only go to Paris if I am in a position to go all the way. At the moment it is more no than yes.”

If Berrettini misses the clay-court season, he would then likely make a direct comeback on the grass court, a surface where he has tasted slight success in the previous years.
